History of Chamoli Gopeshwar

History of Gopeshwar

In earlier times, the region was known as Kedar Khand. The history of Chamoli can be dated back to the times of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is also believed that the Vyasa Gufa where Lord Ganesha has scripted Vedas is in Mana, the last village of India. It is also mentioned in the holy book Rigved, Sapt Rishi saved their life after Jalpralay in Mana itself.

According to Pt. Harikrishna Raturi, the first ruler of Garhwal was King Bhanu Pratap of Panwar Dynasty and he was the one who founded Chanpurgarhi as his capital. It was the strongest Garh among all the 52 Garhas. King Ajai Pal, in the 15th century, integrated the separate 52 principalities each with its own garh or fortress. Till about 300 years, Srinagar which was located on the banks of Alaknanda River was the capital of Garhwal and it remained as a single region. In 1803, the Gorkhas of Nepal invaded the Garhwal region. The Governor of this region was Amar Singh Thapa. This was the time when the Gorkhas came into contact with the British. In the 19th century, Garhwal was attached by the Gorkhas and forced the Grahwal rulers to move to the plains of Harudwar, Dehradun and Rishikesh.

Gorkha rule was established in the region with the victory of the Gorkhas. Further, the region was taken over by th British and was divided into eastern and western Garhwal. The British kept the eastern region of Garhwal with themselves while the western region which lied to the west of Alaknanda River, was handed over to Sudarshan Shah of the Grahwal Dynasty. Finally, this state was known as Tehri Garhwal. Later this region was ruled by his successors named Kirti Shah, Pratap Shah and Narendra Shah who established their own capitals as Kirti Nagar, Pratap Nagar and Narendra Nagar respectively. They ruled from 1815 – 1949.

Later, in 1949 Tehri was merged with Uttar Pradesh state. As the region of Tehri was scattered, it posed a number of problems in the beginning for advance developments. Thus, seeing this situation, on 24th February 1960, Uttar Pradesh government separated one tehsil of Tehri and gave the status of a separate district by the name of Uttarkashi. The newly formed district gained importance because of two noteworthy pilgrimage places – Badrinath and Gangotri. Many parts of eastern Garhwal region were detached in the year 1997.

Rudraprayag district was later established on 16th September, 1997 which again got separated from Chamoli district with two complete tehsil and two other blocks in October 1997. Since then, Gopeshwar became the headquarters of Chamoli district.
